Billy Milligan can be anyone he wants to be . . . except himself.
Out of control of his actions, Billy Milligan was a man tormented by twenty-four distinct personalities battling for supremacy over his body—a battle that culminated when he awoke in jail, arrested for the kidnap and rape of three women. In a landmark trial, Billy was acquitted of his crimes by reason of ins

Author Daniel Keyes has presented a very riveting description of the human condition if it is pushed too far. I have read this book twice and I have to say that it is one of the best books I have ever read.
Enduring unbelievably cruel tortures as a child at the hands of his stepfather, including sodomy and being forced to dig his own grave-and yes, being buried alive in that same grave, Billy Milligan's mind fragmented into 24 seperate and distinct personalities. I have posted the alter ego's be

I read this book in 1988 as I have always been fascinated with 'split personalities' and the fact that this is a local story (based in Ohio... Milligan even spent time in Zanesville and was treated in Columbus). Daniel Keyes does a fantastic job of introducing the reader to all of Milligan's personalities and helping you understand what daily life was like for Milligan.

“Do you want someone to write about you, Billy?” Caul asked.
“I guess I could use the money. When I get better and go out into society, I’ll need something to support me. Who would give me a job?”
“Aside from the money, how do you think you’d feel about the whole world reading about your life?”
Billy frowned. “I think people should know. It could help them understand what child abuse can lead to.”

Failed to keep it concise and to the point
Having obscured the story with countless irrelevant details, Daniel Keyes succeeded in exasperating at least one of his readers. Who cares if Billy's case manager has started hunting deer annually since she was twelve? I thought the title of this book was The Minds of Billy Milligan. My only reason for giving it three stars is that I appreciate the tremendous effort Keyes put into conducting proper research for his book, albeit I am not convinced none of

The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes is a challenging look at the controversial case of William Stanley Milligan, a man diagnosed with multiple disorder, who was acquitted for several violent and heinous crimes by pleading insanity as his defense. Armed with sympathetic psychologists and skilled lawyers, the strange case of Billy Milligan is chronicled in great detail by Daniel Keyes, best known for his book, Flowers For Algernon, which also delves deeply into murky waters of human psycho...more

This book is a serious mind fuck for me.
When it comes to writing technique; this book lacks of dramatic elements, and the language used is too clinical, too many characters, and probably the conversations in the book were transcribed from tapes. But once I took the book, I was drawn so deeply by the story.
The details I found in this book put me in amazement. I could see each characters' description clearly and fell in love with Allen (and so were my friends). I sympathized each people inside Bil

This book is what introduced me to what's commonly known as MDP-Multiple Personality Disorder (now called Dissociative Identity Disorder). It was written in 1981, a time where only a few doctors and therapists believed in MDP, where it was unlikely for Billy to recover.
He was the host of 24 different personalities: men, women and children. It all started when he was a kid. Not bearing his stepfather's sexual abuse on a regular basis, Billy's mind developed another personality to suffer his pain

Have you ever wanted to meet any literature character?
I guess everyone has. There is a number of people I would really pull out of pages too. And after reading a book about a man with 24 separate personalities including, for example, a colour-blind Yugoslavian 'keeper of hate', a lesbian who raped women, a drug-addicted and several other bright, independent and sometimes totally different alters, there is a new leader in this list. And the fact that Billy Milligan was a real person, the first

*Incredibly unpopular opinion ahead apparently*
We know that a world without pain is a world without feeling...but a world without feeling is a world without pain.

The life of Billy Milligan is as tragic as it is fascinating and the fact that this book does indeed shine a light on the traumas that he went through and that eventually led to his multiple personality disorder makes me glad that I picked it up. It's extremely heartbreaking how people at that time handled his situation, how there wer

This story blew my mind away! I've been fascinated and horrified by it. And if Leo is not gonna get an Oscar for playing Billy I don't even know what's wrong with the world. ( and yes, I'm 100% sure that he is gonna play this role perfectly !)

Even though the story is about a criminal, I think most readers will agree that you can't hate Billy or his identities/minds. Daniel Keyes has done a great job depicting Billy's life in a way that makes you feel sorry for him and everything he's been through. Given the fact that contemporary TV and Hollywood movies are full of cruelty, violence, blood, sex and all that jazz, this story wasn't surprisingly shocking, but some moments were indeed repulsive. The most infuriating characters of all we...more
The Minds of Billy Milligan is the most disturbing story I've ever read. Realizing that all of it is nothing but truth gives more shocker than the most perfect plot twist you can ever think of.
When I started reading this book, I was already familiar with Milligan's story - the first person who was not convicted for rape crimes for the reason of multiple personality. I was sure that nothing would surprise me, because I actually knew how it would end. I was dead wrong.

The Minds of Billy Milligan is the result of numerous interviews/discussions with Milligan (and some of his many personalities) and most of the people involved in the case, as well as interviews Keyes conducted with the people involved in Milligan’s personal life. It is always interesting to read about real people and their stories, but in a non-fiction but you are not expecting to find such a fantastic story.

This is a well written and interesting story. It had to be a huge undertaking for this author, so bless his heart for doing so, as I probably would have never known this story otherwise. The author tells the story in such a way as to keep the reader interested. I read somewhere that James Cameron was going to write a screenplay and direct a movie based on this book, but it got bogged down by lawsuits. It is a shame, because I can completely see this book adapted into a movie. Again it would be a...more

I ended up reading it in a couple of days. I just couldn't put it down. I found myself rooting for Billy despite all of his horrific crimes. The story of his life is really fascinating. I sympathized with him and wanted him to find his way through and find peace. I have been interested in mental disorders since...more
An interesting look at mental illness and criminality. Daniel Keyes is a very capable writer and I was more than a little letdown with how he approached Billy's hospitalization and psychological study. The Minds of Billy Milligan really shined when Keyes wrote about Billy's life and traumas that contributed to his illness. A good read but Billy Milligan's story is infinitely more compelling than what is written in this book.
This is madness. This is hell. This is a tragedy. I’d rather die than live like this. Poor poor man.
3,5 stars because it was really dragged out at times and the writing style was not really my cup of tea (strange, considering how much I loved Flowers for Algernon written by the same author)

I have read some atypical biographies in my time but this book was without a doubt the most bizarre I have ever come across. I suppose that is to be expected when the subject of the biography has twenty four different personalities: some young, some old, some male, some female, some domestic, some foreign. A few observations both about the book and about dissociative identity disorder (DID) in general:
1) The way the book is written suggests the author is using some degree of dramatic license. It

This book contains so much useful information about human psyche.
This is a true story about a very uniquely talented, clever, fragile and at the same time are impossibly strong and self-disciplined person.
This is a real proof to Fraud's psychoanalysis theory, that all the mental disorders are based on traumatic events of the past. When the situation becomes unbearable for the mind to accept or deal with it's reality, it represses the traumatic event in different ways depending on a person.

For the first time after been so long not reading a thick book, I can finish this one in only less than a week. The first night I got this novel, I didn't sleep at all. My eyes were so sleepy, yet Billy's personalities journey for seven years kept me up.

Dr. George Harding noted that the fused Billy Milligan will be less than the sum of his parts.
This is sadly true. Through the book, the writer takes you on a journey of the life of a man and the 23 other persons that live inside him. You begin by fearing the Billy responsible for Ohio State University rapes, wishing him to go to jail. The writer skilfully introduces you to their superficial selves first; Arthur's superiority, Ragen's anger, Allen's street smartness, Adalana's sexuality and you

My first impression of Dissociative identity disorder (DID) came from the film Primal Fear starring Edward Norton as a brutal murderer who pretends to have the disorder. I attempted to read this book when I was in Primary 5 but it was too difficult for me then, so my feelings toward DID remained suspicious.
Keyes' report of Milligan's true story made me believe. The pieces surrounding Milligan's story are gathered very well to present a smooth story. I kept finding out more about his 'people' and

I should’ve finished this review long time ago. Although each time I tried I just failed. This is an incredibly sad and true story of a man, who experienced tragedy and as a result he divided into 24 separate personalities, each one unique.

The book is very similar to 'Flowers for Algernon' by the same author. Truth be told, I'd prefer reading 'Flowers for Algernon' instead four times out of five, as it is easier to read and a bit more fast-paced. However, there is a huge difference between the two. That is 'The Minds of Billy Milligan' is a non-fiction and is based on real life events. And that makes all the difference reading. While the story line might seem unintriguing or boring sometimes, it is real. Is your everyday life a fa...more

An awesome biographical novel by Daniel Keyes about Multi personality disordered Billy William Milligan.
He was primarily accused of double rape cases. After his arrest the police found something different in him. Later it was discovered that he has twenty-four-polar disorder. He was not actually Billy only. Rather 24 more other personalities with different traits lived inside him.

Whether one believes the story of Billy Milligan and his 24 different personalities, or thinks that is all just a lifetime hoax, this is one of the things I liked about the book. It tries to let one decide for himself. There were times throughout the book where I felt the author drifting to one of the sides, just a bit of bias towards the camp of those advocating the multiple personalities. At the end of the day, it has enough of the 'bad' Billy throughout it to avoid making one feel that

So, first and foremost, though this is a true story, it doesn't read like a textbook. No, it reads almost like a novel and it's really easy to get lost in. Although it is written like a novel, at the same time, I think that it is impossible to lose sight of the fact that it is recounting actual events.
This book is not, by any means, for everyone. Some people will not be able to make it through this book. Others will be able to make it through it but I don't think that anyone will walk out of
